Transportation
The Chapter's Transportation Committee volunteers are working
for a better regional transportation system – one that allows people
to get where they need to go quickly and efficiently without significantly
polluting the
air.
We are working to strengthen our public transportation system by ensuring that
Metro is responsive and accountable to the public and adequately funded so
that the system can purchase new buses and rail cars to keep up with continuing
growth
in ridership. The committee is working to expand the Metro system – including
light rail lines in D.C. and the Purple Line, a new Metrorail line that would
circle the city – so that it serves more communities. We continue to promote
better information about Metrobus routes so that more people will be aware of
how the system may serve them. And we advocate for streets that are safer for
pedestrians and bicyclists – two non-polluting means of transportation.
The D.C. Chapter’s Transportation Committee works closely with our fellow
Sierra Club activists from the Maryland and Virginia chapters on regional growth
and transportation issues under the umbrella of the Metro D.C. Challenge to
Sprawl Campaign in order to build a better future for the region. For more
information about how to get involved, please contact Chris Carney, Sierra
Club Conservation Organizer, at 202-237-0754, or visit www.sierraclub.org/dc/sprawl.
